# Development Logging

Add the smallest structured signal that proves behavior without exposing sensitive data or creating production noise.

## Workflow

1. Identify the behavior, layer, consumer, and diagnostic question.
2. Check the repository logger, environment controls, naming conventions, and existing event taxonomy.
3. Define stable event names and safe fields before adding calls.
4. Add logs at state transitions, external calls, validation rejects, retries, and failures.
5. Verify output in development and absence or intended severity in production.
6. Test redaction and remove temporary debug instrumentation.

Read [references/contracts.md](references/contracts.md) when defining event shape, environment behavior, or cross-layer correlation.

## Invariants

- Use structured fields, not concatenated prose.
- Use `debug`, `info`, `warn`, and `error` consistently.
- Keep verbose diagnostics development-only through `NODE_ENV`, `LOG_LEVEL`, or framework equivalent.
- Never log secrets, tokens, passwords, authorization headers, private keys, or raw PII.
- Redact identifiers when full values are unnecessary.
- Do not swallow an error merely because it was logged.
- Do not add logs that duplicate an existing lower-layer signal without new diagnostic value.

## Verification

Provide evidence for:

- Expected event emitted
- Fields and severity correct
- Sensitive values absent or redacted
- Production behavior correct
- Temporary debug logs removed
