# Agent Secret Hygiene Use this whenever an agent reads, edits, logs, backs up, or publishes files that may contain credentials. ## Rules - Never paste raw secrets into chat, docs, commits, logs, or issue bodies. - Use environment variables and example placeholders. - Keep `.env` out of Git. - Scan staged files before committing. - Redact values as `[REDACTED]` in reports. ## Common secret patterns - API keys - bot tokens - OAuth credentials - private keys - JWTs - database URLs - webhook secrets ## Verification Before publishing or pushing: ```bash git diff --cached | grep -Ei 'token|secret|password|api.?key|private key|bearer' && exit 1 || true ``` Also run a dedicated secret scanner when available.
