How to install Agent Skills in Cursor

This guide installs the diagnosing-superpowers skill in Cursor and ends with a check that Cursor shows it. An Agent Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. The steps copy one into place by hand, because the docs describe no CLI install command. The folder paths and the install route come from Cursor's documentation, and the clone and copy commands come from the listing's install data.

Checked against Cursor's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Cursor installed and able to start.
  • Git, to copy a skill from its repository (or download the repository as a zip).
  • A skill folder: diagnosing-superpowers is used here.
  1. 1. Know what a skill is

This step covers the two required fields and the two places Cursor looks for skills, one for you and one for a single project.

    • name (required; lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, matching the folder) and description (required).
    • Where Cursor looks: ~/.cursor/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for you, .cursor/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for one project.
  2. 2. Install a skill (diagnosing-superpowers)

The docs describe no CLI install command. This step copies the folder by hand into ~/.cursor/skills/, and the notes also mention importing a skill from GitHub by packaging it in a plugin repository.

Copy the skill folder into ~/.cursor/skills/
git clone --depth 1 --branch main https://github.com/obra/superpowers.git skill-src
    mkdir -p ~/.cursor/skills
    cp -r skill-src/skills/diagnosing-superpowers ~/.cursor/skills/diagnosing-superpowers
    rm -rf skill-src
    • The docs describe no CLI install command: create a folder with SKILL.md in a skills directory. To bring a skill in from GitHub, package it in a plugin repository and import it from Customize.
    • For one project only, copy it into .cursor/skills/ instead.
  3. 3. Load it in a session

Start a new session after copying the skill. The note says skills are discovered at startup and that the docs do not say whether edits reload.

    • Skills are discovered at startup. The docs do not say whether edits reload.

Check that it works

Type / in Agent chat to invoke a skill, or look under Customize > Skills.

Troubleshooting

A skill is missing in Cloud Agents
Only ~/.cursor/skills/ syncs to Cloud Agents; a skill in ~/.agents/skills/ does not. Put it in the repo's .cursor/skills/ for automations. Source

Security notes

  • A skill is instructions plus, sometimes, scripts that the agent can run with your permissions. Read SKILL.md and any scripts before you install a skill from someone you do not know.
  • Skills can tell the agent to do things you did not ask for; Agent Market does not grade skill security yet, so check the source yourself.
  • Prefer the host's own install route when it has one; here that is: The docs describe no CLI install command: create a folder with SKILL.md in a skills directory. To bring a skill in from GitHub, package it in a plugin repository and import it from Customize.
