How to install Agent Skills in Gemini CLI

This guide installs the diagnosing-superpowers skill in Gemini CLI and ends with a check that Gemini CLI lists it. Gemini CLI has its own gemini skills install command, so the first route installs straight from the repository. A manual folder copy is shown as well. The folder paths and the install route come from Gemini CLI's documentation, and the commands come from the listing's install data.

Checked against Gemini CLI's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Gemini CLI installed and able to start.
  • Git, to copy a skill from its repository (or download the repository as a zip).
  • A skill folder: diagnosing-superpowers is used here.
  1. 1. Know what a skill is

Gemini CLI reads the name and description from the frontmatter of SKILL.md. Skills sit in a dot-gemini folder, either in your home directory or inside a single project.

    • SKILL.md has YAML frontmatter with name and description; the name should match the folder name.
    • Where Gemini CLI looks: ~/.gemini/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for you, .gemini/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for one project.
  2. 2. Install a skill (diagnosing-superpowers)

The first block installs straight from the repository, picking out the skill subfolder with --path and setting user scope. The second block is a manual copy for anyone who prefers to place the folder themselves.

    Install it with Gemini CLI
gemini skills install https://github.com/obra/superpowers.git --path skills/diagnosing-superpowers --scope user
Copy the skill folder into ~/.gemini/skills/
git clone --depth 1 --branch main https://github.com/obra/superpowers.git skill-src
    mkdir -p ~/.gemini/skills
    cp -r skill-src/skills/diagnosing-superpowers ~/.gemini/skills/diagnosing-superpowers
    rm -rf skill-src
    • Run gemini skills install with a git URL or local directory. It defaults to user scope; add --scope workspace for the current project, and --path to pick a subfolder of a repository.
    • The install command asks you to confirm before it installs; --consent skips that prompt.
  3. 3. Load it in a session

Begin a new session after installing. If you would rather stay in the session you have, /skills reload is the refresh the docs give.

    • Skills are discovered at session start. Inside a session /skills reload refreshes them.

Check that it works

Gemini CLI can list skills from your shell and from inside a session, so use whichever is handy.

gemini skills list
  • Run gemini skills list, or /skills list inside a session.

Security notes

  • A skill is instructions plus, sometimes, scripts that the agent can run with your permissions. Read SKILL.md and any scripts before you install a skill from someone you do not know.
  • Skills can tell the agent to do things you did not ask for; Agent Market does not grade skill security yet, so check the source yourself.
  • Prefer the host's own install route when it has one; here that is: Run gemini skills install with a git URL or local directory. It defaults to user scope; add --scope workspace for the current project, and --path to pick a subfolder of a repository.
