How to add an MCP server to Cursor

This guide adds MCP servers to Cursor, using Playwright MCP, Figma MCP Server and Firecrawl MCP Server from the catalog as examples. Playwright MCP runs locally, Figma MCP Server is hosted and connects by URL, and Firecrawl MCP Server runs locally and can take an API key. The config examples are for .cursor/mcp.json, and the last section covers how to check the result. Entries come from the listings' install data, and paths come from Cursor's own documentation.

Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Built from catalog data; how we rank and grade

Checked against Cursor's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Cursor installed and able to start.
  • Node.js with npx for local servers that run through npx (check with node --version), or the runtime the server's listing names.
  • An API key or account only for servers that need one; hosted servers that sign in with OAuth need an account with that service.
  1. 1. Choose a server and see what it needs

    Cursor can keep a server in a project or globally, so decide where each server should live before you edit anything. The notes below say what each example server needs.

    • Playwright MCP: runs locally, no key needed.
    • Figma MCP Server: hosted, connect by URL, no key needed.
    • Firecrawl MCP Server: runs locally, can take FIRECRAWL_API_KEY.
    • Where Cursor can keep a server: project (.cursor/mcp.json) and global (~/.cursor/mcp.json).
  2. 2. Add a local server (Playwright MCP)

    Playwright MCP runs locally, so its entry holds a command and its arguments under mcpServers.

    Add this to .cursor/mcp.json in the project, or to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project.cursor/mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "playwright-mcp": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "@playwright/mcp@0.0.82"
          ]
        }
      }
    }
  3. 3. Add a remote server (Figma MCP Server)

    Figma MCP Server is hosted, so its entry in the block holds a URL and no command.

    Add this to .cursor/mcp.json in the project, or to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project.cursor/mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "figma": {
          "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    • If the server uses OAuth, Cursor starts the sign-in the first time you enable it from Customize.
  4. 4. Keep API keys out of the file (Firecrawl MCP Server)

    Firecrawl MCP Server can take FIRECRAWL_API_KEY. The config entry refers to ${env:FIRECRAWL_API_KEY}, so the key can stay in your environment, and the second block sets the variable in a shell.

    Add this to .cursor/mcp.json in the project, or to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project.cursor/mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "firecrawl-mcp-server": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "firecrawl-mcp@3.34.1"
          ],
          "env": {
            "FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "${env:FIRECRAWL_API_KEY}"
          }
        }
      }
    }
    Set the variable in the shell you start the host from
    export FIRECRAWL_API_KEY="paste-your-value-here"
    • Values can use ${env:NAME}, ${userHome} and ${workspaceFolder}, so a token can stay in your environment.
    • Cursor expands ${env:NAME} from its own environment, so the variable has to be set where Cursor starts.
    • FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (optional): Your API key for Firecrawl.
  5. 5. Restart or reload if the server does not appear

    Use this step if the server does not appear. It restates what the docs say and do not say about restarting, and about approval before an agent uses an MCP tool.

    • The docs do not say whether editing mcp.json needs a restart. They tell you to restart Cursor after updating files of a custom local server.
    • Cursor asks for approval before an agent uses an MCP tool unless you allowlist it.

Check that it works

Open MCP Logs in the Output panel and look for connection errors. A working server lists its tools under Available Tools, and agent mcp list shows connection state from the terminal.

  • Open the Output panel (Cmd+Shift+U on macOS), choose MCP Logs, and look for connection errors. A working server lists its tools under Available Tools; agent mcp list shows connection state from the terminal.

Troubleshooting

A server fails or an npm-based server misbehaves after an update
Check the MCP Logs channel in the Output panel. For npm-based servers the docs suggest removing the server, running npm cache clean --force, and adding it again. Source

Security notes

  • A local server runs with your user account's permissions and can do whatever you can on that machine; read what it does before you add it (MCP's security guidance says the same).
  • A remote server receives what the agent sends it. Check who runs it and what the service does with your data.
  • Values can use ${env:NAME}, ${userHome} and ${workspaceFolder}, so a token can stay in your environment.
  • Agent Market does not grade security yet, so a listing page shows no security grade today; read the server's source and permissions yourself (see How we grade security).
