How to install Agent Skills in Codex

This guide installs the diagnosing-superpowers skill for Codex and ends with a check that Codex shows it. An Agent Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. The install step shows two routes: a $skill-installer line to run inside a Codex session, and a clone and copy into ~/.agents/skills/. The folder paths and the install route come from Codex's documentation, and the clone and copy commands come from the listing's install data.

Checked against Codex's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Codex installed and able to start.
  • Git, to copy a skill from its repository (or download the repository as a zip).
  • A skill folder: diagnosing-superpowers is used here.
  1. 1. Know what a skill is

The notes say what SKILL.md must include and give the two places Codex looks for skills, one for you and one for a single project.

    • SKILL.md must include name and description. Optional folders are scripts, references and assets.
    • Where Codex looks: ~/.agents/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for you, .agents/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for one project.
  2. 2. Install a skill (diagnosing-superpowers)

Inside a Codex session you can run $skill-installer, or you can create a folder that contains SKILL.md in a skills directory. The blocks show the in-session line and a clone and copy into ~/.agents/skills/.

    Inside a Codex session
    $skill-installer diagnosing-superpowers
Copy the skill folder into ~/.agents/skills/
git clone --depth 1 --branch main https://github.com/obra/superpowers.git skill-src
    mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
    cp -r skill-src/skills/diagnosing-superpowers ~/.agents/skills/diagnosing-superpowers
    rm -rf skill-src
    • Inside a Codex session run $skill-installer to install a skill, or create a folder that contains SKILL.md in a skills directory. The docs list no codex skills command.
  3. 3. Load it in a session

Start a new session after adding the skill. The note below says what to do if the skill does not appear.

    • Codex detects new and changed skills automatically; restart it if one does not appear.

Check that it works

Run /skills to see the skills, or type $ to mention a skill by name.

Troubleshooting

A new or edited skill does not show
Restart Codex. Source
Some skills are missing from a long list
Codex shortens descriptions first and may omit skills; raise skills.max_context_tokens (the docs cap it at 10,000). Source

Security notes

  • A skill is instructions plus, sometimes, scripts that the agent can run with your permissions. Read SKILL.md and any scripts before you install a skill from someone you do not know.
  • Skills can tell the agent to do things you did not ask for; Agent Market does not grade skill security yet, so check the source yourself.
  • Prefer the host's own install route when it has one; here that is: Inside a Codex session run $skill-installer to install a skill, or create a folder that contains SKILL.md in a skills directory. The docs list no codex skills command.
