# Merge duplicate payees **Tools:** `list_payees`, `update_payee`, `modify_transactions` ## Steps 1. Resolve `plan_id` (see [setup](../README.md#setup)). 2. Call `list_payees`, excluding YNAB's internal `"Transfer : ..."` payees. 3. Cluster likely duplicates by fuzzy match (shared substrings, abbreviations, case differences). 4. YNAB has no merge endpoint, so pick one per cluster: rename duplicates to an identical canonical name (`update_payee`), or repoint their transactions onto one surviving `payee_id` (`modify_transactions` `action="update"`, bulk) for true consolidation. 5. Show the proposed clusters and chosen approach before writing anything. 6. Apply on confirmation, then re-run `list_payees` to confirm. ## Done when No unintended near-duplicate payee names remain. ## Note YNAB has no delete-payee endpoint. A payee whose transactions were all repointed elsewhere stays in `list_payees` with zero transactions -- harmless, but don't expect it to disappear.
