# Env Audit

Use this workflow to map environment variables without exposing secret values.

## Goal

Generate a reliable env inventory and classify variable safety/usage.

## Outputs

- `.ai/ENVIRONMENT_MATRIX.md` using `templates/ENVIRONMENT_MATRIX.md`.
- `.env.example` with names only, no values.

## Rules

- Never print or commit real secret values.
- Never commit `.env.local`.
- Never convert server-only secrets into public-prefixed vars.
- Do not modify provider dashboards unless explicitly asked.

## Steps

1. Run `scripts/scan-env.mjs` from this skill to collect usage.
2. Compare discovered vars with existing docs (`.env.example`, README, CI config).
3. Classify each variable:
   - Client/Public
   - Server Secret
   - Build-time required
   - Runtime required
   - Optional
4. Identify missing docs, unsafe exposure, duplicate names, and likely unused vars.
5. Generate/update `.env.example`.
6. Generate/update `.ai/ENVIRONMENT_MATRIX.md`.

## Suggested command

```bash
node skills/env-audit/scripts/scan-env.mjs --root .
```

## Done Check

- Matrix includes variable, scope, required status, usage path, notes.
- No secret values in artifacts.
