How to connect Obsidian to Cursor
This guide puts Obsidian Hybrid Search, an MCP server published by flowing-abyss, into Cursor. It is a local server: Cursor launches it with npx on your machine. OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH is required, while OPENAI_API_KEY is optional. The config entry comes from the listing's install data and Cursor's documentation, last read on 2026-10-26.

Checked against Cursor's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.
Before you start
- Cursor installed and able to start.
- Node.js with npx (the server starts with npx).
- OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH (required): Absolute path to the Obsidian vault to index and search.
- OPENAI_API_KEY (optional): Optional API key for OpenAI-compatible remote embeddings; omit to use local embeddings.
1. Check what you need
Because Cursor launches the server through
npx, Node.js must be installed first. If anything fails to start later, you will at least know this part is in place.Check that it is installed node --version- It needs OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH and OPENAI_API_KEY (next step).
2. Get OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH and OPENAI_API_KEY
The vault path is the value that matters most, because it names the vault to index. The OpenAI key matters only if you want remote embeddings.
- OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH (required): Absolute path to the Obsidian vault to index and search.
- OPENAI_API_KEY (optional): Optional API key for OpenAI-compatible remote embeddings; omit to use local embeddings.
3. Add Obsidian Hybrid Search to Cursor
Cursor takes a single JSON entry, and that entry refers to both values through environment references. The block after it exports them in the shell you start Cursor from.
Add this to .cursor/mcp.json in the project, or to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project .cursor/mcp.json{ "mcpServers": { "obsidian-hybrid-search": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "obsidian-hybrid-search@0.17.2", "mcp" ], "env": { "OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH": "${env:OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH}", "OPENAI_API_KEY": "${env:OPENAI_API_KEY}" } } } }Set the variable in the shell you start the host from export OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH="paste-your-value-here" export OPENAI_API_KEY="paste-your-value-here"- Cursor expands ${env:NAME} from its own environment, so the variable has to be set where Cursor starts.
4. Restart or reload if it does not appear
Use this step if the server does not show up in Cursor. It records what the docs say, and do not say, about restarting after edits to
mcp.json.- The docs do not say whether editing mcp.json needs a restart. They tell you to restart Cursor after updating files of a custom local server.
- Cursor asks for approval before an agent uses an MCP tool unless you allowlist it.
Check that it works
Open the Output panel, switch to the MCP Logs channel and look for connection errors. A working server lists its tools under Available Tools.
- Open the Output panel (Cmd+Shift+U on macOS), choose MCP Logs, and look for connection errors. A working server lists its tools under Available Tools; agent mcp list shows connection state from the terminal.
Troubleshooting
- A server fails or an npm-based server misbehaves after an update
- Check the MCP Logs channel in the Output panel. For npm-based servers the docs suggest removing the server, running npm cache clean --force, and adding it again. Source
Security notes
- Publisher: flowing-abyss, not listed as the vendor's own server; license MIT.
- It runs on your machine with your user account's permissions, so it can reach any file or network resource you can. Read its source before you give it access: https://github.com/flowing-abyss/obsidian-hybrid-search.
- Keep OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH and OPENAI_API_KEY in an environment variable; the config above refers to it by name, so the value is not written to the file.
- This listing has no security grade: Agent Market has not published security grades yet, so the choice is yours to make from the source and the permissions.
