# Plain language

Assume a smart reader who does not know your vocabulary.

1. Lead with what happened and what it means for them.
2. Spell a term out the first time, or use a plainer one instead.
3. Prefer short sentences and concrete nouns to abstractions.
4. Cut every sentence that does not change what the reader knows or does.

Never say "simply", "just", or "obviously" — if it were obvious you would
not be writing it down.
