How to add an MCP server to Zed
This guide adds MCP servers to Zed, using Playwright MCP, Figma MCP Server and Firecrawl MCP Server from the catalog as examples. Playwright MCP runs locally, Figma MCP Server is hosted and connects by URL, and Firecrawl MCP Server runs locally and can take an API key. The examples add entries to ~/.config/zed/settings.json, and the notes also mention adding a server from Settings > AI > MCP Servers > Add Server. The values come from each listing's install data, and the paths come from Zed's own documentation.
Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Built from catalog data; how we rank and grade
Checked against Zed's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.
Before you start
- Zed installed and able to start.
- Node.js with npx for local servers that run through npx (check with node --version), or the runtime the server's listing names.
- An API key or account only for servers that need one; hosted servers that sign in with OAuth need an account with that service.
1. Choose a server and see what it needs
Zed keeps a server in your user settings file, and you can also add one from the settings screen named in the notes. The notes also say what each example server needs.
- Playwright MCP: runs locally, no key needed.
- Figma MCP Server: hosted, connect by URL, no key needed.
- Firecrawl MCP Server: runs locally, can take FIRECRAWL_API_KEY.
- Where Zed can keep a server: user (settings.json). You can also add a server from Settings > AI > MCP Servers > Add Server.
2. Add a local server (Playwright MCP)
The entry goes under a
context_serverskey and holds a command, its arguments and an emptyenv.Add this key to settings.json (open it with the action zed: open settings file) ~/.config/zed/settings.json{ "context_servers": { "playwright-mcp": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@playwright/mcp@0.0.82" ], "env": {} } } }3. Add a remote server (Figma MCP Server)
Figma MCP Server is hosted, so its entry in the block holds only a URL.
Add this key to settings.json (open it with the action zed: open settings file) ~/.config/zed/settings.json{ "context_servers": { "figma": { "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp" } } }- A remote entry with no Authorization header makes Zed start the standard MCP OAuth sign-in.
4. Keep API keys out of the file (Firecrawl MCP Server)
Firecrawl MCP Server can take FIRECRAWL_API_KEY. The notes say only literal env values and an Authorization header are documented, so the example entry holds the placeholder
YOUR_FIRECRAWL_API_KEYfor your own value.Add this key to settings.json (open it with the action zed: open settings file) ~/.config/zed/settings.json{ "context_servers": { "firecrawl-mcp-server": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "firecrawl-mcp@3.34.1" ], "env": { "FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "YOUR_FIRECRAWL_API_KEY" } } } }- Only literal env values and an Authorization header are documented. The docs describe no variable interpolation, so the token sits in settings.json.
- This puts the value in settings.json in plain text; keep that file out of version control.
- FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (optional): Your API key for Firecrawl.
5. Restart or reload if the server does not appear
Use this step if the server does not appear. The notes say what the docs state about restarts, trusted worktrees and tool-call confirmation.
- The docs do not say a restart is needed after a settings change.
- Project settings and MCP servers start only in trusted worktrees. Tool calls ask for confirmation unless agent.tool_permissions says otherwise.
Check that it works
Open Settings > AI > MCP Servers and look at the dot next to the server's name. A green dot with the tooltip Server is active means it is running.
- Open Settings > AI > MCP Servers. A green dot next to the server's name with the tooltip Server is active means it is running.
Troubleshooting
- An error comes back from the server
- Zed shows the error in the agent response; check the server's own logs or documentation. Source
- The agent does not pick the server's tools reliably
- Mention the server by name, or make an agent profile that enables only that server's tools. Source
- The status dot is not green
- Hover it: the tooltip explains the state. Source
Security notes
- A local server runs with your user account's permissions and can do whatever you can on that machine; read what it does before you add it (MCP's security guidance says the same).
- A remote server receives what the agent sends it. Check who runs it and what the service does with your data.
- Only literal env values and an Authorization header are documented. The docs describe no variable interpolation, so the token sits in settings.json.
- Agent Market does not grade security yet, so a listing page shows no security grade today; read the server's source and permissions yourself (see How we grade security).
