How to add an MCP server to Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

This guide adds MCP servers to Windsurf (Devin Desktop), using Playwright MCP, Figma MCP Server and Firecrawl MCP Server as catalog examples. Playwright MCP runs locally, Figma MCP Server is hosted and connects by URL, and Firecrawl MCP Server runs locally and can take an API key. You will see a Devin CLI command where one exists, the config file entry, and a way to confirm the servers loaded. Commands come from each listing's install data, and paths come from the host's own documentation.

Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Built from catalog data; how we rank and grade

Checked against Windsurf (Devin Desktop)'s documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Windsurf (Devin Desktop) installed and able to start.
  • Node.js with npx for local servers that run through npx (check with node --version), or the runtime the server's listing names.
  • An API key or account only for servers that need one; hosted servers that sign in with OAuth need an account with that service.
  1. 1. Choose a server and see what it needs

    The product name has two parts here, and the scopes you can use depend on whether you work in the app or with the Devin CLI.

    • Playwright MCP: runs locally, no key needed.
    • Figma MCP Server: hosted, connect by URL, no key needed.
    • Firecrawl MCP Server: runs locally, can take FIRECRAWL_API_KEY.
    • Where Windsurf (Devin Desktop) can keep a server: user (the shared mcp_config.json). The Devin CLI adds project and local scopes.
  2. 2. Add a local server (Playwright MCP)

    Playwright MCP is described the same way in two places: a Devin CLI command and an entry in mcp_config.json. Use whichever matches how you work.

    Or, with the Devin CLI
    devin mcp add -s user playwright-mcp -- npx -y @playwright/mcp@0.0.82
    Add this to mcp_config.json (macOS and Linux path shown)~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "playwright-mcp": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "@playwright/mcp@0.0.82"
          ]
        }
      }
    }
  3. 3. Add a remote server (Figma MCP Server)

    Figma MCP Server needs only a url key in the file, or the Devin CLI add command with the URL. Sign-in is handled separately for the CLI.

    Or, with the Devin CLI
    devin mcp add -s user figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
    Add this to mcp_config.json (macOS and Linux path shown)~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "figma": {
          "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    • With the Devin CLI, run devin mcp login with the server name if it asks for authentication.
  4. 4. Keep API keys out of the file (Firecrawl MCP Server)

    The Cascade agent expands environment references written as ${env:FIRECRAWL_API_KEY}, so the Firecrawl MCP Server entry can hold a reference instead of the key itself.

    Add this to mcp_config.json (macOS and Linux path shown)~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "firecrawl-mcp-server": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "firecrawl-mcp@3.34.1"
          ],
          "env": {
            "FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "${env:FIRECRAWL_API_KEY}"
          }
        }
      }
    }
    Set the variable in the shell you start the host from
    export FIRECRAWL_API_KEY="paste-your-value-here"
    • Cascade config accepts ${env:VAR} and ${file:/path} in command, args, env, url and headers; an unset variable becomes an empty string.
    • Cascade expands ${env:NAME} in the config, so the value stays in your environment; an unset variable becomes an empty string.
    • FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (optional): Your API key for Firecrawl.
  5. 5. Restart or reload if the server does not appear

    The docs give little guidance on refreshing, so this step is mainly about team allowlists and the rename that affects which agent reads which config.

    • The docs do not say whether a refresh or restart is needed.
    • Team admins can allowlist servers; once any server is allowlisted all others are blocked.
    • Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop. The Cascade page covers only the legacy Cascade agent; the Devin Local agent reads the Devin CLI's config.

Check that it works

Windsurf lists servers in the MCPs section of the Cascade panel, and the Devin CLI has its own list command.

devin mcp list
  • In the Cascade panel the MCPs section lists each server with its enabled tool count. With the Devin CLI run devin mcp list.

Troubleshooting

Devin CLI says authentication is required
Run devin mcp login <server-name>; each client authenticates separately. Source
A server will not start
Test the command outside Devin and check the environment variables it needs. Source
An allowlisted server still fails
The allowlist pattern must match your config exactly, and the server ID must match the mcp_config.json key including case. Source

Security notes

  • A local server runs with your user account's permissions and can do whatever you can on that machine; read what it does before you add it (MCP's security guidance says the same).
  • A remote server receives what the agent sends it. Check who runs it and what the service does with your data.
  • Cascade config accepts ${env:VAR} and ${file:/path} in command, args, env, url and headers; an unset variable becomes an empty string.
  • Agent Market does not grade security yet, so a listing page shows no security grade today; read the server's source and permissions yourself (see How we grade security).
