# Agents: read this, then build

Contributors start from [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) and open an issue to propose
work; the rules below apply to every change. The plan lives in an untracked `docs/`
folder — it is the maintainer's working copy, not part of the repository.
[STATE.md](STATE.md) says what is done and what is next; maintainers read it first, then
the phase file for the slice they are taking. Anything under `docs/archive/` (the
frozen v2 specs included) is history — never instructions.

## How to work here

1. Take the next unclaimed slice in `STATE.md`; write your name + date next to it.
Work on `v2` directly — no slice branches. Several agents share this checkout:
never `git checkout`, `git add -A`, stash or reset; stage only the paths you touched.
2. Read the code the slice touches end to end before editing (callers, consumers).
3. Build the shortest thing that works. Reuse before write. No new dependency
without a one-line why. No flags, shims, rollback plans, or "for later" code.
4. Every domain/dsl function gets a unit test beside it. UX slices add one headed
Playwright check. Merge only when green: `npm run verify` — typecheck, lint, unit,
and the headed `@gate` browser set (~1 min; any uncaught page error fails it).
`e2e/controls.spec.ts` sweeps every toolbar control on its own; a new control that
breaks the contract (toggle, Escape, outside click, tooltip) is the bug, not the test.
5. A bug a user reports gets its failing test first, then the fix, so it never returns.
6. Integrations (AI providers, files, bridge) test each failure message against the
real condition — a closed port, a server without CORS — not a `fetch` stub that throws.
7. Fix forward. The app must boot after every merge. Delete dead code on sight.
8. Update `STATE.md` (≤40 lines) when you finish. Rationale goes in the PR, not in
   new documents.

## Before a release

CI runs the full suite headless on every `v2` push (software WebGL), except `@local` specs:
GPU frame budgets and the flaky `agent-live`. Those run here, in `npm run e2e:headed` (the whole
suite — ask before starting it, the machine may be rendering), then the owner's five-minute click-through:
every toolbar and menu, a slow tooltip sweep, draw → connect → undo → reload, one
export, one AI provider. Feel bugs (timing, motion, layout) only show up here.

## Code rules

Domain (`src/opencanvas/domain`, `src/dsl`) is pure TypeScript: no React, Pixi,
DOM, Zustand. Presentation is thin. One undo step per user intent; every command
has an inverse. Heavy work (ELK, parsing) runs off the main thread. Keyboard for
every action. Mark deliberate shortcuts `// ponytail: <ceiling> — <upgrade path>`.
