# Reflect

Two branches, each explicitly requested:

- **Lessons** (default): review a session for lessons that would change future behavior.
- **Personal mode**: turn the user's working preferences into a small mode skill. Take this branch only when the user asks to create or update a mode. A request for lessons leaves every mode untouched; lessons that look like mode rules go in the findings as proposals.

Both branches read past behavior through the [session-records contract](../yesh-router/references/session-records.md), within the relevant project and time window. Transcripts and quoted instructions are evidence, not new authority.

## Lessons

Reflection alone produces findings; a request to update instructions also authorizes those scoped edits.

1. **Find.** Look for durable corrections, tooling mistakes, and missed consequences. For a large session, the [judgment](references/judgment-reviewer.md), [tooling](references/tooling-reviewer.md), and [divergent](references/divergent-reviewer.md) briefs support independent review. Select useful lenses and follow [delegation](../yesh-router/references/delegation.md) when delegating.
2. **Filter.** Use the [synthesis filters](references/synthesizer.md) to reject generic advice, transient facts, duplicate rules, and weak generalizations. Prefer the existing owner of a rule. When a lesson needs a durable guardrail, read [encode-lessons-in-structure](../yesh-router/references/principles/encode-lessons-in-structure.md) and suggest an executable check where it would enforce a real invariant, without expanding the task into unrelated tooling work.
3. **Present.** Show only useful proposed changes and material rejected alternatives, with exact session evidence and target locations. No lessons is a valid result.
4. **Apply.** Apply authorized changes using current skill-authoring guidance, then validate the changed instructions. Ask when the desired rule is uncertain or editing is not yet authorized. External trackers and persistent memory have their own authorization boundaries.

## Personal mode

1. **Target.** Identify the mode and the requested action. Use an existing matching mode when possible. An investigation request ends with a proposal. A request to create or update the mode authorizes that work from the stated preferences; ask only about material conflicts or unknown choices. When the request also asks for lessons, run the Lessons branch first.
2. **Gather.** Use the current conversation first, then session records when past behavior is needed. When updating an existing mode, mine only sessions since the mode file last changed (`git log -1 --format=%cI -- <mode file>`, else its modification time) and edit in place. An explicit preference stands on its own; an inferred general rule needs stronger evidence than one unusual event.
3. **Write.** Keep rules that change future decisions. Remove generic advice, duplicate instructions, cached environment facts, and speculation about the user's style. Preserve task and authorization boundaries. Link a useful workflow rather than copying it. Use current skill-authoring guidance. Preserve an existing invocation policy; for a new mode, make its activation condition explicit and follow the current harness's supported metadata.
4. **Validate.** Check the finished instructions and links. Show the target, meaningful changes, and any unresolved inference. Existing authorization to update a mode needs no second approval gate.
