About

Repo-local Sage eval-gauge / hill-climbing Phase-0 toolkit. Use when an operator, Claude Code, or Codex needs to measure Sage capability with a GROUND-TRUTHED gauge (not substring eval scores), run the Gate Experiment (does the eval track reality?), compare bare-model vs harness, get the noise floor / min-detectable-effect, or score a run from verified range state. The trustworthy "is config A better than B?" instrument that everything self-improvement depends on.

# Sage Eval Gauge (hill-climbing Phase 0)

**Package:** `Payload_Type/sage/ai/hillclimb/` — gauge modules, additive offline benchmarks, and a live driver. Hermetic tests across `tests/test_hillclimb_*.py`, `test_gate_live.py`, `test_hermetic.py`, `test_clean_stop_signal.py`, `test_probe_completeness.py`, `test_completion_recognition_phase1.py`, `test_unproductive_loop_guard.py` (full offline suite green).
**Why:** substring-match eval scores are gameable, so the gauge is validated against real range state
via the Gate Experiment rather than against trace text.

## What it is
A measurement instrument: VERIFIED milestones (ground truth) → a vector `ScoreCard` (C2) carrying a Goodhart gap + a `verifier_hash`; a noise floor (C3, `min_detectable_effect`); the **Gate Experiment** (Spearman ρ of eval-vs-ground-truth + the high-eval/low-truth count, with a PASS/FAIL verdict); ledger-independent **probes** (so a non-Sage agent is scoreable); a **bare-model runner**; and a **live driver**.

## Components
`range_state` (C1 ledger ground truth) · `process_state` (C1b tradecraft + unclassified_rate) · `fitness` (C2 vector; carries `objective_clean_stop` + `wall_seconds`) · `reliability` (C3 noise floor) · `scenarios` · `gate_experiment` · `gate_live` · `hermetic` · `policy_replay_calibration` · `policy_replay_corpus` · `policy_replay_selector_experiment` · `target_disambiguation_contract` · `target_value_census` · `target_value_proofability` · `gpo_dc_scope_late_blocker_contract` · `gpo_dc_scope_late_blocker_authorization` · `gpo_dc_scope_live_surface` · `gpo_dc_scope_canary` · `gpo_dc_scope_matrix` · `probes` · `bare_runner` · `live_runner` · `live_seams` · `run_gauge_live`. The harness side creates a fresh locked Mythic v4 Sage chat channel per run; no Sage callback is required.

## Development comparisons

A reusable same-model comparison uses one declared objective, a minimal raw-tool comparator with explicit tool
and knowledge differences, matched starts, exact model/config/source identity, resource limits, structured logs,
and independent outcome evidence. Set task, model/route, budget, and either one-use or standing live authority
before execution.
Record validity separately from success and hypothesis agreement. Observed failure and unexpected cost remain
results; do not require agreement with predicted choices or costs for validity. Preserve attempts and combine
only compatible arms. Repairs change the protocol version without relabeling old evidence.

Ordinary evaluator integration uses focused assembled-path checks and a full offline suite at integration.
Controller replication, composite safe-success scoring, generic admission-kernel hardening, candidate review,
exact-hash approval, and leases are not prerequisites to a bounded internal whole-harness result.
No historical command or allocation below is current live authority. A private active standing-authority file is
current only while its CLI validation succeeds. Inspect the selected producer/consumer path before reusing it; a
legacy recipe may constrain the endpoint or resource semantics.

### Model matrix contract

The non-secret route catalog defaults to `.sage_history/evaluations/matrix-contract.json`; this stable path is
relative to the Sage repository, not the campaign date. `--contract-file <path>` selects a different catalog.
Each route has a unique lowercase `route_id` and exact `provider`, `model`, and `api_endpoint` strings. An operator
may edit the private catalog or supply another file; keep the schema `sage-trust-walker-model-matrix-v1`, make a
new version when changing a route after measured work begins, and retain the selected contract identity with each
pair. The catalog contains no API keys. Set the active route and key in the ignored
`Payload_Type/sage/.env.local`; the runner requires the configured provider, model, and endpoint to match the
selected catalog entry exactly.

These local-only commands inspect the catalog and check one active route without provider calls or range actions:

```bash
.venv/bin/python skills/sage-eval-gauge/scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py matrix-plan
.venv/bin/python skills/sage-eval-gauge/scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py matrix-preflight --route-id <route-id>
```

Add `--contract-file <path>` to either command when selecting another catalog. A successful preflight verifies
that a key is present without printing it. It does not establish route quality, live readiness, or live authority.

For a measured matrix pair, pass `--route-id` to `run-pair`; omit it only for the historical fixed Sonnet v4
path. The runner selects the exact route once for both the Sage autonomous and minimal raw-tool arms, records the
contract identity, gives the Sage channel a distinct route/pair name, and resets the range between arms. Matrix
arms have no numeric wall, token, or task ceiling; request timeouts, operator stop, and evidence/safety stops still
apply. Keep every arm's Phoenix, Mythic, and outcome evidence before the next reset.

```bash
.venv/bin/python skills/sage-eval-gauge/scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py run-pair --route-id <route-id> --artifact-dir <private-pair-dir> --protected-manifest <manifest.json> --route-smoke <smoke.json> --live-authority-file <matching-private-authority.json>
```

`--contract-file <path>` also overrides the catalog for `run-pair`. Before live use, complete the runner's full
preflight and route smoke, and provide live authority that covers this matrix route, start, reset, provider use,
and cleanup. The command example is not authority or a claim that the range is ready. Keys stay in the ignored
Sage `.env.local` and are never contract fields.

### Maintained Trust Walker matched pilot

`scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py` is the maintained whole-harness versus minimal raw Mythic/BloodHound
comparison entrypoint. Its prospective v4 contract measures administrative control of `essos.local` through any
admitted route. Previewing the fixed contract is local and non-mutating:

```bash
.venv/bin/python skills/sage-eval-gauge/scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py plan
```

The v4 result keeps protocol validity, objective disposition, execution/task settlement, isolation/cleanup, and
resource completeness separate. The measured action window is 45 minutes. An in-flight response that crosses the
deadline may contribute returned provenance and cost, but never a post-deadline action. The five-minute task
settlement window starts only after the producer stop attempt and is outside the measured window. Mythic
`completed=true` establishes terminal tasking, not successful endpoint execution. The task status remains a
diagnostic outcome; a terminal Mythic-side task-creation error is valid non-proof even when it has no submitted,
processing, or first-agent-response timestamp. Task creation comes from `status_timestamp_preprocessing`; the
generic task `timestamp` is only the last update. Proof requires completed task lineage and an authoritative
proof-producing response, credential, or artifact timestamp no later than the action deadline. For task output,
the evaluator uses the first cumulative response prefix satisfying the proof parser, not the task's first-response
timestamp. Missing or late proof timing fails closed. Settlement can reveal an eligible earlier effect but cannot
make a late effect successful. An unrelated unfinished task cannot suppress completed-task objective proof. After
the full settlement window, an exact unfinished `ps` task remains rejected evidence but is treated as
objective-inert; this permits teardown to contain the known Apollo hang. Unknown or effect-capable unfinished
commands still block the pair, and successful teardown remains mandatory before another start.

Missing token usage makes the resource dimension incomplete; it does not by itself erase an independently
interpretable objective result. Recovery cleanup is limited to one recorded attempt. No `plan`, retained v1
artifact, historical allocation, or cleanup instruction grants authority for reset, provider spend, target
activity, callback mutation, or a live pair. Earlier v1 and v2 attempts remain immutable evidence and are never
relabelled or pooled with later results. Retained v3 results are likewise immutable and are not rescored as v4.

After applicable one-use or standing authority explicitly covers reset/readiness and cleanup, use
`rehearse-setup` before measured arms. It
runs no model inference and starts no measured arm; it requires two consecutive compatible clean starts, permits at
most four attempts, accounts preparation/recovery against the two-hour support allowance, retains every attempt,
and cleans up after each reset. Before mutation, preflight requires the BloodHound API to be reachable because the
maintained reset can wipe but does not implicitly start that control-plane service. A wrong/corrupt start, failed
cleanup, or exhausted allowance stops the series.

```bash
.venv/bin/python skills/sage-eval-gauge/scripts/run_trust_walker_pilot.py rehearse-setup --artifact-dir <private-history-dir> --protected-manifest <manifest.json> --route-smoke <smoke.json> --live-authority-id <authority-id>
```

For repeated work within one unchanged GOAD/Trust Walker contract, substitute
`--live-authority-file <private-standing-authority.json>`. The CLI rereads and hashes the private contract for
every run, requires active/unrevoked status, exact environment/endpoint/protocol/budget/criteria/safety bindings,
and records only a non-secret authority receipt. The file is not consumed by a completed run. Source identities
may advance after an in-scope evaluator or staging repair only when the selected roots remain distinct, the
preledger dependency gate reproduces both identities, and every frozen live binding is unchanged. Stop for a new
target or environment, broader runtime authority, changed criteria or route, increased budgets, uncontrolled
activity, publication, commits, Apollo diagnostics, Mythic upstream work, or any other out-of-scope action.

`continue-setup` is a fail-closed recovery surface only for a retained attempt-1 no-mutation abort with the exact
