# Start Work

Goal: establish a safe, task-owned starting point without disturbing unrelated work.

1. Confirm the repository root, applicable local instructions, current branch, and `git status --short --branch`.
2. Preserve unrelated dirty work. Inspect overlapping work before deciding whether to continue, isolate, or report a collision; do not use destructive cleanup.
3. Choose the safest base from repository policy. For concurrent or dirty work, create an isolated worktree/branch; otherwise use an existing clearly task-owned branch when appropriate.
4. Record the branch, base, preserved work, scope, and first verification target before editing.

Do not create a branch or tracker item for a read-only question or small local edit. Follow project branch policy over generic defaults; never implement directly on a protected production branch.
