# Package XML Workflows Use when creating or updating a manifest for retrieve, deploy validation, or review. ## Workflow 1. Identify changed metadata from source paths or version control diff. 2. Map files to metadata types and member names. 3. Keep package manifests focused on the requested work. 4. Validate XML shape before using it with Salesforce CLI. 5. Retrieve or validate using the manifest: ```bash sf project retrieve start --target-org <alias> --manifest manifest/package.xml --json sf project deploy validate --target-org <alias> --manifest manifest/package.xml --test-level RunLocalTests --json ``` ## Guardrails - Do not use wildcard manifests for deployment validation unless the user requests broad validation. - Include companion metadata when required, such as fields with objects or LWC bundles with metadata XML. - Keep API version consistent with the project unless there is a reason to change it.
