# Delivery — Self-Paced

This skill adapts instructional design principles for self-paced, asynchronous developer education. It covers maintaining motivation without live interaction, effective chunking for independent study, spaced review systems, asynchronous feedback loops, progress transparency, and supporting learner autonomy without abandonment.

## Features

- **Intrinsic Motivation Design**: Autonomy, progress visibility, competence scaffolding
- **Strategic Chunking**: Micro-lessons (10-15 min) with clear stopping points
- **Spaced Review Architecture**: Retrieval practice integrated throughout
- **Asynchronous Feedback**: Automated checks, community feedback, async instructor review
- **Progress Tracking**: Visual markers, completed modules, skill badges (optional)
- **Just-In-Time Support**: Interactive notebooks, embedded hints, searchable FAQs
- **Momentum Maintenance**: Streak counters, completion targets, pathways visible

## When To Use

- Designing online courses, tutorials, or documentation-based learning
- Building learning paths learners take at their own pace
- Creating interactive notebooks (Jupyter, Pluto, Observable, etc.)
- Designing video courses with integrated practice
- Building skill development platforms

## Guidelines

### Chunking & Micro-Lessons

**Ideal lesson length**:
- **Video**: 5-12 minutes (max 15)
- **Written tutorial**: 2-5 minutes reading (not including practice)
- **Interactive notebook**: 10-15 minutes to complete
- **Code practice**: 5-15 minutes per challenge

**Why small chunks**:
- Adults concentrate effectively for ~13 minutes on focused material
- Natural stopping points enable resume-and-forget recovery
- Reduces commitment anxiety: "Just 10 min" vs. "A whole course"
- Supports chunking in long-term memory formation

**Chunk structure**:
```
[1-2 min] Learning objective + Why it matters
[5-8 min] Core content (concept, demo, or explanation)
[2-3 min] Simple practice or interactive element
[1 min]   Reflection prompt or key takeaway
[Optional] Link to related learning or next step
```

### Motivation Maintenance (Self-Paced)

**The challenge**: Without live interaction and group energy, motivation is intrinsic. Self-directed learners often **don't complete** without intentional design.

**Autonomy Support** (Core for adults):
- [ ] Learner chooses learning path (if multiple tracks exist)
- [ ] Can skip prerequisites if confident (self-assessment gate)
- [ ] Can jump to later modules if motivated
- [ ] Choice of format: video, text, interactive notebook (if feasible)
- [ ] Ability to speed up or slow down
- **Caveat**: Autonomy ≠ no structure; provide sensible defaults

**Competence & Progress Visibility**:
- [ ] Explicit learning objectives at start of each module
- [ ] Pre-assessment (optional): "Do you already know this?"
- [ ] Progress bar or completed module count: "3 of 12"
- [ ] Skill badges or milestone checkpoints: celebrates wins
- [ ] Difficulty indicators: "Intermediate: 15 min"
- [ ] Time estimates (helps learners plan)
- [ ] Clear success criteria: "You'll know this when you can..."

**Relatedness & Meaning**:
- [ ] "Why this matters" context in first 30 seconds
- [ ] Real-world application scenarios (not contrived examples)
- [ ] Connection to learner goals: "This unblocks X"
- [ ] Student success stories (diverse representation)
- [ ] Community element: Discussion forum or Slack channel (optional but powerful)

**Streak & Gamification** (Optional; use carefully):
- Streak counter: "7 days learning" (don't punish breaks)
- Level or rank progression (if it aligns with real competence)
- **Caution**: Poorly designed gamification backfires; avoid fake points that devalue actual learning

### Progress Tracking & Checkpoints

**Tracking mechanisms**:
- [ ] Course dashboard showing % complete
- [ ] Module-level checklist: "Videos watched, practices completed, quiz passed"
- [ ] Time spent per module (informational, not punitive)
- [ ] Practice exercise history (what they've tried)
- [ ] Spaced review due dates (integrated into calendar/notifications)

**Checkpoints & Milestones**:
- Every 3-5 modules, a meaningful checkpoint:
  - Quiz (retrieval practice, low-stakes)
  - Mini-project (integrative)
  - Peer code review (community learning)
  - Reflection prompt (metacognition)

**Resume-ability**:
- [ ] Save progress automatically
- [ ] Show where they left off when returning
- [ ] Quick recap: "Last time you learned X. Today we're building on that."
- [ ] Re-engagement notification after 3+ days away (friendly, not pushy)

### Spaced Review & Retrieval Practice

**Integration throughout**:
- [ ] End-of-lesson quiz (immediate retrieval after 5-10 min)
- [ ] Module recap quiz (retrieval after completion)
- [ ] Integrated spaced review: automated reminders at optimal intervals
- [ ] Cumulative assessments (mix old + new concepts)
- [ ] Retrieval practice is NOT graded; it's learning

**Spacing schedule**:
- First review: 1-2 days after lesson
- Second review: 1 week after lesson
- Third review: 2-3 weeks after
- Fourth review: 1 month after
- (Adjust based on learner performance)

**Low-stakes quizzing** (most effective):
