# Brief

Research that does not fit on one page does not get read. Compress an investigation into the minimum a decision needs.

1. State the decision the brief serves and the question that would change it. A brief with no decision is a summary, not a brief.
2. Lead with the answer in one or two sentences, then the evidence that supports it. Give the strongest evidence first and label its source and date.
3. State what was investigated and ruled out, in one line each, so the reader knows the negative space.
4. Name the residual uncertainty and the specific observation that would resolve it. Do not pad with context the decision does not need.

A brief is read-only and does not authorize action. If the evidence cannot support a one-page answer, say so rather than stretching it.

Record this output in `docs/plans/` per the [doc system](../references/doc-system.md), delegating the write to a subagent.
