How to connect Neo4j to Claude Code

MCP Neo4j Cypher, published by neo4j-contrib, runs on your machine, and this guide connects it to Claude Code. It starts through uvx, and the listing marks NEO4J_URI, NEO4J_USERNAME and NEO4J_PASSWORD as required. You get the add command, a .mcp.json alternative and a check that Claude Code sees the server. They come from the listing's install data and Claude Code's documentation, last read on 2026-10-26.

Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Built from catalog data; how we rank and grade

Checked against Claude Code's documentation on Oct 26, 2026. Commands and config blocks are generated from the same install data as each listing page.

Before you start

  • Claude Code installed and able to start.
  • uv, which provides uvx (the server starts with uvx).
  • NEO4J_URI (required): Neo4j connection URI.
  • NEO4J_USERNAME (required): Neo4j username.
  • NEO4J_PASSWORD (required): Neo4j password.
  1. 1. Check what you need

    uv provides uvx, the launcher for this server, so install it before you add anything to Claude Code.

    Check that it is installed
    uv --version
    • It needs NEO4J_URI, NEO4J_USERNAME and NEO4J_PASSWORD (next step).
  2. 2. Get NEO4J_URI, NEO4J_USERNAME and NEO4J_PASSWORD

    Every value here is required, so collect the connection address, the username and the password. Keep them private.

    • NEO4J_URI (required): Neo4j connection URI.
    • NEO4J_USERNAME (required): Neo4j username.
    • NEO4J_PASSWORD (required): Neo4j password.
  3. 3. Add MCP Neo4j Cypher to Claude Code

    Pick the user-scope command to register the server for all your projects, or use .mcp.json to define it for one project. The JSON version refers to each value through an environment variable, and the last block exports them.

    Add it for you in every project
    claude mcp add --transport stdio --env NEO4J_URI=YOUR_NEO4J_URI --env NEO4J_USERNAME=YOUR_NEO4J_USERNAME --env NEO4J_PASSWORD=YOUR_NEO4J_PASSWORD --scope user mcp-neo4j-cypher -- uvx mcp-neo4j-cypher@0.5.1
    Or share it with the project: put this in .mcp.json at the project root.mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-neo4j-cypher": {
          "command": "uvx",
          "args": [
            "mcp-neo4j-cypher@0.5.1"
          ],
          "env": {
            "NEO4J_URI": "${NEO4J_URI}",
            "NEO4J_USERNAME": "${NEO4J_USERNAME}",
            "NEO4J_PASSWORD": "${NEO4J_PASSWORD}"
          }
        }
      }
    }
    Set the variable in the shell you start the host from
    export NEO4J_URI="paste-your-value-here"
    export NEO4J_USERNAME="paste-your-value-here"
    export NEO4J_PASSWORD="paste-your-value-here"
    • The command keeps the value in ~/.claude.json; the .mcp.json version refers to an environment variable, so nothing secret is committed.
  4. 4. Restart or reload if it does not appear

    Servers are read when Claude Code starts, so this step is for the case where the new entry is missing. It also covers the approval prompt for project files.

    • The docs do not say a restart is needed after claude mcp add. Servers connect at startup and can be reconnected from the /mcp menu.
    • In an interactive session Claude Code asks you to approve servers from a project .mcp.json before it uses them; claude mcp reset-project-choices resets those answers.

Check that it works

Check the status of mcp-neo4j-cypher with claude mcp list or /mcp. Anything other than Connected is a sign to look closer.

claude mcp list
  • Run claude mcp list from the shell, or /mcp inside a session. The list shows each server as Connected, Needs authentication, Failed to connect, or Pending approval.

Troubleshooting

Error: MCP server has a "url" but no "type"
Add "type": "http" (or sse) to the entry in the JSON file. Source
MCP server already exists in local config
Remove it from the other scope first with claude mcp remove <name> --scope <scope>, then add it again. Source
A ${VAR} in the config stays literal
The variable is unset. Export it before starting Claude Code or give it a default with ${VAR:-default}; claude mcp list shows a warning. Source
Server shows disconnected in a session
Open /mcp and reconnect it. Source

Security notes

  • Publisher: neo4j-contrib, not listed as the vendor's own server; license MIT.
  • It runs on your machine with your user account's permissions, so it can reach any file or network resource you can. Read its source before you give it access: https://github.com/neo4j-contrib/mcp-neo4j.
  • Keep NEO4J_URI, NEO4J_USERNAME and NEO4J_PASSWORD in an environment variable; the config above refers to it by name, so the value is not written to the file.
  • This listing has no security grade: Agent Market has not published security grades yet, so the choice is yours to make from the source and the permissions.
