How to connect Grafana to Claude Code

MCP Grafana is a hosted MCP server from grafana, which the listing marks as the vendor's own. This guide adds it to Claude Code. Nothing runs on your machine, and the listing names no required key. You get an add command, a .mcp.json option and a check, all based on the listing's install data and Claude Code's documentation, last read on 2026-10-26.

Before you start

  • Claude Code installed and able to start.
  • Network access to mcp.grafana.com.
  • No API key is listed for MCP Grafana.

  1. 1. Check what you need

    With a hosted server there is no local runtime to set up. Claude Code just has to be able to reach mcp.grafana.com.

    • The listing names no required key.

  2. 2. Add MCP Grafana to Claude Code

    Registering a hosted server takes its address and a transport choice. Use the command for every project, or the .mcp.json entry to define it for one project.

  3. 3. Sign in

    Some hosted servers ask you to authenticate. If this one does, use the /mcp menu inside Claude Code to start the sign-in.

  4. 4. Restart or reload if it does not appear

    This step is the fallback if MCP Grafana is not listed after you add it. It spells out what the docs say about restarts and approvals.

    • The docs do not say a restart is needed after claude mcp add. Servers connect at startup and can be reconnected from the /mcp menu.
    • In an interactive session Claude Code asks you to approve servers from a project .mcp.json before it uses them; claude mcp reset-project-choices resets those answers.

Check that it works

Run claude mcp list and look for mcp-grafana in the output, or open /mcp in a session. The status shows whether the connection worked.

Troubleshooting

Error: MCP server has a "url" but no "type"
Add "type": "http" (or sse) to the entry in the JSON file. Source
MCP server already exists in local config
Remove it from the other scope first with claude mcp remove <name> --scope <scope>, then add it again. Source
A ${VAR} in the config stays literal
The variable is unset. Export it before starting Claude Code or give it a default with ${VAR:-default}; claude mcp list shows a warning. Source
Server shows disconnected in a session
Open /mcp and reconnect it. Source
