• explore_attention_summaryread-only

  Get aggregated attention data for research outputs matching your query in Explorer. Returns total mentions across different sources (Twitter, news, blogs, etc.) broken down by date. This is a single-page endpoint with no pagination. Requires Explorer API credentials.

  Get geographic distribution of mentions by country for specific mention sources. Use this to find where mentions originate from (e.g., which countries are tweeting about or covering research in the news). Supports X (tweet), Facebook (fbwall), news (msm), policy, and guideline demographics. Defaults to X if no source specified. Returns mention counts and unique sources per country.   Get aggregated mention data by journal. Returns journal names, ISSNs, and mention counts broken down by source type. This is a single-page endpoint with no pagination - it does not honor page[size], so a broad query aggregates every matching journal into one response (e.g. q="cancer" returns ~12,000 journals) and will be truncated to fit client size limits. Narrow it with filters (a more specific q, a timeframe, type, a publication date range, scope, or by scoping to specific identifiers) to keep the result complete. Requires Explorer API credentials.

  Get the number of mentions per mention source for research outputs matching your search. Analyze which platforms, channels, and outlets are mentioning research. X accounts are returned without a name: our licence with X allows only the numeric account id, so those sources appear as ids while news outlets, blogs, Bluesky and Reddit accounts come back named. Supports pagination. Requires Explorer API credentials.

  Get individual mentions of research outputs from your Explorer search. Returns detailed information about each mention including author info, URLs, timestamps, and related research outputs. Mentions from X are the exception: under our licence with X we expose only the numeric post and account ids, never the account handle or the post text, so an X mention cannot be attributed to a named account through this API at any tier.   Retrieve citation counts and basic metadata for a research output using its DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID, or other identifier. The score comes back unrounded (a single tweet scores 0.25), while Altmetric rounds it UP wherever it displays a score, so report 1 rather than 0.25 if the figure has to match what a customer sees on a details page, a badge or in the Explorer. Returns citation metrics across various platforms (Twitter, news, blogs, policy documents, etc.). Available with free tier API keys.

  List the institutional departments in your Altmetric Explorer instance. Returns every department with its id and name; use a department's id as a value for the department_id filter on the other Explorer tools (e.g. explore_research_outputs). Only available to institutions with a data integration (PURE, Elements, OAI-PMH, or CSV); institutions without one return an empty list. Takes no arguments and fetches every page for you, returning your institution's full department set. Requires Explorer API credentials.

• search_citationsread-only

  Search and retrieve aggregated citation data across all tracked research outputs for a specific timeframe. Returns lists of outputs sorted by citation counts, filtered by various criteria. Available with free tier API keys.

• translate_identifiersread-only

  Translate research output identifiers (DOIs, PMIDs, arXiv IDs, etc.) into Altmetric IDs. Useful for discovering which identifiers Altmetric has data for. Supports batch translation of up to 100,000 identifiers per request. The identifier type is auto-detected. This is a commercial feature requiring a paid API key.
