  • compare_locations

Compare a region or a set of places on rainfall, temperature or snowfall over the same past period (this water year, a season, a month, or a ski season): 2-10 places such as towns across several counties, the farms or properties in a portfolio (as "lat, lon"), or a named group of places. For each place: its total or average, how far it is from normal (percent of normal for rain and snow, degrees for temperature), where that period stands in its own record since 1991 ("near average", "3rd wettest"), and its rank against the others. Use it whenever a question is about more than one place, for exa…

  • compare_to_normal

Is the coming week unusually warm, cold, wet or dry? Ranks the forecast for the next few days (up to 10) at a place against the same days in every year since 1991, as percentiles and departures from normal. Forecast only: past weather ("last month", "this water year") is a question for get_climate_context, and windows beyond 10 days are declined. variable must be "temperature" or "precipitation". time_window is optional free text for a near-term window (e.g. "today", "tomorrow", "this weekend", "this week", "the next 10 days") — defaults to "this week". Baseline Climate states its own confide…

  • get_climate_context

Past, recent and coming weather at a named place, measured against that place's own record since 1991. Use it for how wet, dry, hot or cold a place has been (this water year, last winter, a named month such as August 2026); whether that, or the next 10 days, is unusual; where a period ranks in the record ("2nd driest since 1991"); and how it compares with the 1991-2020 normal. Answers are computed from ERA5-Land reanalysis (daily, about 10 km, land only) and Open-Meteo forecasts, not from news or web pages, and they state their own coverage. query MUST be phrased as a question in one of these…

  • get_context_for_coordinates

The next 10 days at an exact latitude and longitude (a field, property, trailhead or site), each day ranked against the same calendar day in every year since 1991 ("warmest October 5 since 1991"), plus where the water year stands there. Takes coordinates only, not a question, and skips place-name lookup. Land only. For a past period at a point, ask get_climate_context with the coordinates in the question. Baseline Climate states its own confidence in an `assessment` field. Relay `assessment.headline` as given. If you shorten it, keep `assessment.if_shortened_keep` intact — it carries the qual…

  • get_seasonal_outlook

Odds that the coming three-month season at a place will be warmer or cooler, wetter or drier than normal: calibrated probabilities for below, near and above normal, from ECMWF's SEAS5 seasonal forecast, with how well the outlook has tested at that place and season. A season-ahead outlook, not a 10-day forecast and not a record of past weather. This is a three-month climate outlook, not a weather forecast. For conditions over the next ten days, or for how unusual recent weather has been, use get_climate_context. location: a place name ("Harare", "Denver, Colorado") or a "lat, lon" string. vari…

  • get_water_year_status

How wet or dry, and warm or cold, a place has been so far this water year (from October 1 in North America; from January 1 elsewhere): totals, percent of normal, and the year's rank against the same span of every year since 1991 ("2nd driest since 1991"). The record publishes about a month behind, so in October it answers the water year just ended and says so. For drought, water supply, range, crop and fire questions. location can be a place name ("Casper WY") or "lat, lon" coordinates. Baseline Climate states its own confidence in an `assessment` field. Relay `assessment.headline` as given. I…
